About Us

WACT Strategic Aim

To provide a forum for collaborative, cross-sector working to improve awareness of and compliance with waste regulations, increase resilience to waste crime, and engage with UK environmental regulators and policy makers to support more effective ways to prevent and tackle waste crime.

Activities

Initiate, support and strengthen collaborative approaches to prevention of waste crime and support compliance
Raise awareness and cross-sector understanding of waste crime and its impacts by creating and disseminating consistent messages and developing educational materials (e.g. 3 Steps to Resilience becomes good business practice)

Assess knowledge and skills gaps and work collaboratively to address these (better educated operators/stakeholders)

Develop guidance, good practice materials and case studies

Work with other initiatives (e.g. Right Waste Right Place, SCRAP Fly Tipping) to amplify existing campaigns

Promote the benefits of legitimate trade
Initiate, support and strengthen collaborative approaches to waste crime information/ intelligence gathering and sharing
Identify and understand cross-sector gaps, vulnerabilities, loopholes that can be exploited (including insurance gaps)

Fill engagement gaps between industry, regulators, waste producers, councils, key industry sectors and bodies (e.g. construction, FM)

Promote a level playing field and a consistent approach to proactive enforcement by supporting the regulators to get the powers they need

Improve reporting and contribute to the flow of intelligence and threat analysis by identifying and sharing information on trends, challenges and opportunities

Reduce the factors that enable waste crime through information sharing across supply chains
Provide strategic, cross-sector input and advice to UK governments and regulators to support effective policy and regulatory developments and interventions
Act as a key cross-sector forum for governments and regulators on new proposals and approaches to tackling waste crime

Proactively develop and recommend improvements to the policy and regulatory approach where identified
